The MODIS MOD14 (Terra) and MYD14 (Aqua) Active Fire Product identifies and characterizes actively burning fires (wildfires, agricultural fires, etc.) and other thermal anomalies (e.g. volcanoes, etc.) at the time of satellite overpass. Fires and other thermal anomalies are detected at a spatial resolution of 1km. Each 1km fire detection represents the geographic location of a detected fire, but not the actual fire size. The actual size of a detected fire can be much smaller than the 1km spatial resolution of the data.
This geospatial dataset contains the year 2004 MODIS MCD14ML Collection 5, Version 1 data record for the continental United States and environs. MCD14ML is the combined Terra and Aqua MODIS Level 2 swath MOD14/MYD14 Active Fire Product. The data are represented as the geographic centroids of the respective 1km pixel where a fire or other thermal anomaly is detected.

The MCD14ML data product are processed and compiled from the MODIS data record by NASA. NASA provides these data to the USDA Forest Service MODIS Active Fire Mapping Program (<http://activefiremaps.fs.fed.us>) for general distribution. The 1 kilometer MODIS fire and thermal anomalies data are intended for geographic display and analysis at the national and regional levels. No responsibility is assumed by the USDA Forest Service or NASA in the use of these data.

The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) sensor collects image data used for comprehensive monitoring of the Earth's lands, oceans and lower atmosphere. Imagery collected by MODIS includes 36 co-registered spectral bands - 20 bands spanning the visible, near infrared and shortwave infrared wavelengths of the electromagnetic spectrum (0.4 to 2.1 microns) and 16 bands covering the thermal infrared region (3.6 to 14.4 microns). The spatial resolution of these bands ranges from 250 meters to one-kilometer.
The MODIS sensor flies onboard two polar-orbiting NASA Earth Observing System (EOS) platforms, Terra (launched in Dec 1999) and Aqua (launched in May 2002). Both Terra and Aqua MODIS orbit at an altitude of approximately 705 kilometers on a repeating 16-day orbit cycle. The Terra platform follows a descending sun-synchronous polar orbit with a 10:30 AM equatorial overpass while Aqua MODIS follows an ascending sun-synchronous polar orbit with a 1:30 PM equatorial overpass. The MODIS sensor has a 55-degree view angle either side of nadir providing a 2,330-kilometer viewing swath of the Earth's surface centered on the instrument's orbit ground track. The wide MODIS viewing swath in combination with each platform's orbit configuration provides the ability for each MODIS sensor to image any location daily in the mid to high latitudes of the Earth.
Both MODIS sensors also have a 100% duty cycle and therefore collect thermal emissive image data on the nighttime passes in addition to both reflective solar and thermal emissive image data collections on daytime passes facilitating a total of four daily thermal observations for fire detection and monitoring. Fire detections are extracted from MODIS image data at a spatial resolution of 1 kilometer using the MODIS Fire and Thermal Anomalies algorithm described at <http://modis-fire.umd.edu/Documents/atbd_mod14.pdf>.

The identification of a fire can be the result of a hot fire in a relatively small area or a cooler fire over a larger area. 2) Raw ASCII MCD14ML data imported into an Arc/INFO coverage for the calendar year defined with a geographic coordinate system (WGS84 datum/spheroid) and clipped to the boundaries of the continental United States including the adjoining area within a 50km buffer of those boundaries.
3) MCD14ML coverage exported into additional geospatial data formats (ESRI shapefile and geodatabase) for distribution.
