Description:
Abstract:
This dataset represents year 2019 VIIRS I Band active fire detections for the 7 day period specified for the geographic area covering the continental United States including a 50km buffer around the periphery. The detections are obtained using S-NPP VIIRS data collected and processed as a cooperative effort between the USDA Forest Service Remote Sensing Applications Center, University of Maryland, NASA-Goddard Space Flight Center Direct Readout Laboratory and participating ground stations.
Purpose:
These fire detection data are collected for the USDA Forest Service Active Fire Mapping Program (https://fsapps.nwcg.gov/afm). These data are intended to provide a synoptic view of cumulative detected fire activity over the specified time period. These data are collected at a spatial resolution of 375 meters and therefore are only intended for geographic display and analysis at the national and regional scales. No responsibility is assumed by the USDA Forest Service in the use and application of these data by end users.

Use_Constraints:
These data are updated multiple times daily throughout the year, therefore it is recommended that users reacquire the data from the USDA Forest Service as necessary. This dataset is current for the 7 day period ending with the Julian date and time stamp specified. For example, viirs-af_fire_last7_2019_101.e00.gz means that the data set is current for the 7 day period starting on day 95 (April 5, 2019) and ending on day 101 of the year 2019 (April 11, 2019). Acknowledgement of the USDA Forest Service Remote Sensing Applications Center, University of Maryland and NASA would be appreciated in products derived from these data.

Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
Active fire detection attributes are derived from the VIIRS I Band fire detection algorithm provided by the University of Maryland. The VIIRS I Band algorithm uses the 375 meter imagery bands, or "I Bands", to detect fires and generates a fire detection product four times more spatially resolute than the 750 meter resolution VIIRS-AF product provided by NASA and VIIRS Active Fires Applications Related Product (ARP) provided by NOAA. For additional information on the VIIRS I Band fire detection algorithm and product, see the VIIRS I Band Product Description provided by the University of Maryland.
Logical_Consistency_Report:
S-NPP VIIRS provides complete coverage of the mid to higher latitudes two times daily. S-NPP crosses the equator on an ascending node at 1:30 PM (local time) and also on a descending node at 1:30 AM, similar to Aqua MODIS. VIIRS data are acquired for the majority of the United States and southern Canada in near real time at the USDA Forest Service Remote Sensing Applications Center (RSAC) in Salt Lake City. VIIRS data for the eastern United States, Alaska, Hawaii and the rest of Canada are acquired near real-time from other selected VIIRS ground stations. VIIRS data are processed within minutes of acquisition at RSAC and other VIIRS ground stations to identify and extract active fire locations.
Completeness_Report:
The active fire detections are discerned using the 375 meter Imagery (I) thermal bands of VIIRS. VIIRS I Band data processing is currently conducted using a codebase provided by the University of Maryland with plans to soon migrate the algorithm to the NASA (International Polar Orbiter Processing Package (IPOPP) framework. VIIRS I Band active fire detections are provided as the centroids of the 375 meter pixels containing detected fire activity and compiled into daily GIS layers with all available fire attributes. Identification of a VIIRS I Band pixel as "fire" does not necessarily mean that the entire area represented by the pixel is on fire. The identification of a fire can be the result of a small hot/intense fire or fire activity over a larger area. At this time, there is no way to discriminate between these two possibilities.

Fires smaller than the 375 meter resolution of VIIRS Imagery (I) bands can be detected. Validation of the VIIRS I Band active fire detection product and estimates of minimum detectable fire size and temperature is ongoing. Several factors may affect the ability to detect fire activity, including timing of fire activity at the time of satellite overpass; cloud cover, heavy smoke and other atmospheric obscurations above the fire; satellite view angle or the location of the fire on the swath of imagery collected by satellite; local land cover heterogeneity, etc.

Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
Active fire detection points represent the centroid of the 375 meter pixel for a fire detection. Points are accurate to at least +/- 75 meters.

Source_Contribution:
VIIRS I Band active fire detections derived from codebase provided by the University of Maryland and VIIRS processing capabilities facilitated by the NASA International Polar Orbiter Processing Package (IPOPP) used for USDA Forest Service Active Fire Mapping.
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
VIIRS I Band active fire detection data are created through the following general steps:

1) Process raw VIIRS telemetry data (RDRs) to generate level 1 (SDR) products in HDF format using IPOPP.

2) Active fires are detected by processing the SDRs using prototype codebase provided by the University of Maryland to generate level 2 output in HDF and ASCII output and subsequently compiled into daily GIS layers and temporally filtered to extract the past 7 days of data.

3) VIIRS I Band active fire detection GIS datasets are transformed from a WGS84 datum to NAD83 datum.
